The m-factor guitarquiz 9

9th installment. This time, I used my trusty yet battleworn old Squier strat in addition to the Ibanez S270. The strat was used on Song 42........

As always, submit answers to mfactorquiz (at) gmail.com by the end of Friday 022208. Each song holds the potential of two points - one point for artist and one point for the song. Answers will be posted on Saturday 022308.

Battleworn... Like your Strat is some hep of junk. It's in great condition considered it's played a lot. Only place where it's really noticable is the frets/ fingerboard.

And since I'm dong so well on the quiz and seeing that I'm some of an experted in a few, selected musical genres, I'm going to give people a hint about quiz no. 9: None of these tunes are from Alestorm...

It's not junk at all, but lemme' tell you; that neck and those frets are worn............

And actually; when using the strat for some tracks and then skipping to - say - the S270 for other tracks, the difference in output from the Ibanez pickups and the HS3's in the strat is way noticeable.

Considering that the HS3 was thought to be a happy medium between SCs and HBs, the output is weak.....

So, you are saying that your pickups are vintage voiced?
;-)

Yeah, I did say that you really can tell from the frets/ fretboard that this guitar has been played (can't remember anything 'bout the neck, though). If it hadn't been for the pickups, an easy fix would be to replace the whole neck with something from warmouth (or a made in Mexico/Japan orginal fender neck). But if you're not completly happy with the pu's, you might as well just keep it as it is and buy a new (strat-style) guitar. Bet it would make an excellent slide guitar, though... ;-)

Yeah; the neck is worn by playing exclusively, but as you know - the wear and tear is pretty bad.

Although it should be mentioned that my primary reasoning for buying the Jem was that I wanted to retire the strat from active duty

No guitar that features something called "monkey grip" can't replace a true classic like the Fender Stratocaster.

Yes, I keep telling you that you have a pretty low head count in the resonator guitar department...
;-)

Seriously, my point was that the neck is an easy fix if that was the only problem. But if you're going to start replacing neck and electronics, then yeah, it might be just as good to spring for a new one. And if you feel the JEM does the strat duties fine, then good for you. I just keep thinking that there might be a scalloped Fender signature model out there somewhere that begs you to take it home with you... ;-)

Yep - my reasoning ended up being somewhat shady. I considered buying the YJM signature, but ended up with the Vai guitar. A decision I do not regret in the slightest, I might add.

But yeah; some day I'll just break down and buy the YJM. With maple neck, probably.
