Answers - guitarquiz 17

...while I probably can't top Anders' spoof off of my ramblings to each songs - here's what I recorded (with teh Ibanez Jem, btw):
  • Song 81: Tommy Tutone - 8675309/Jenny. None of y'all got this song, although two of you had some suggestions I kind of consider to be close: Anders suggested "Run To You" by Bryan Adams - an artist Anders knows well - and Cathy suggested "Radio Nowhere" by Bruce Springsteen. Close but no cigar. Pointwise, not even a cigarette butt - sorry. Tommy Tutone embodies what the term "one-hit wonder" is all about, but this song was hyooge.
  • Song 82: The Offspring - Why Don't You get A Job. I don't like punk rock and I can't stand Obla-Di Obla-Da by the Beatles, so count on me not liking this song. Neext..
  • Song 83: Ac/Dc - You Shook Me All Night Long. Like Anders correctly stated, you better believe this one rocked the house back in my gigging days. Ever seen anyone try to dance to this song? It's quite the sad sight......
  • Song 84: Iron Maiden - The Trooper. Awesome song - what else is there to say. And yeah; we played it live a lot whenever the second guitar player was sober enough to manage to play the harmony part.
  • Song 85: Bon Jovi - Living On A Prayer. yet again, Anders pre-empted my filler, so I'll just add that the effect this song is known for - the vocoder "talk box" is one of the most useless guitar effects ever.

This means that the Score for round 17 looks like this:

  1. Cathy/Pigeon/Sondre (tied at 8/10)
  2. ...
  3. ...
  4. Anders (5/10)

The Total Score however, looks like this:

  1. Sondre (116 points)
  2. Pigeon (98 points)
  3. Anders (93 points)
  4. Cathy (90 points)
  5. Torbjørn (6 points)

Congrats to the winners and good luck with Quiz 18!

In your face Anders

You talking to me?
You talking to me?
You talking to me?
Then who the hell else are you talking... you talking to me? Well I'm the only one here. Who the f*ck do you think you're talking to? Oh yeah?

Is that the stupid looking tube you have in your mouth while playing? If so, it's not only useless, it makes you look stupid as well...

So, my comments on this round. Was a bit lucky and a bit unlucky this round:

Song 81: Tommy Tutone - 8675309/Jenny.
Song 82: The Offspring - Why Don't You get A Job.

I knew these two songs when I heard them, I just couldn't remember the name of them. The have been major hits, so I've heard both of them. As for the first one, I never heard of the guy or the song title, even if somebody told me that. And since I even couldn't remember any of the lyrics, my google-fu was useless as well. I've heard of Offspring and the song, so given more time I would have had a fighting chance of remembering this one. Still a big "Norway-in-the-Eurovision-Song-Contest" 0 for me on the two first ones.

AC/DC - You Shook Me All Night Long.
Easiest track this round. I don't have any AC/DC albums, but I remember this intro as slightly different. So I was only 99% sure on this one. Is this note-for-note accurate, W-boi?

Iron Maiden - The Trooper
Haven't got a clue. The tune remined me a bit of Iron Maiden - Can I Play With Madness, so I went for that one. 1 point for the band.

Bon Jovi - Living On A Prayer.
Hate those bass songs. The bass reminded me a bit about Living On A Prayer, but the guitar riff I'm not familiar with. Damn 80's hair metal!
Still, of all the likely and unlikely things I could think of which resembled this tune, I went with Bon Jovi and Living On A Prayer. 2 points.

Otherwise known as "I say, I say boy...who's responsible for this assault on my person"

That's the one. The vocoder, aka the Dorkifier

This ain't the intro, but rather the main riff. And it's pretty close, with more or less full chords being played rather than root-fifth thingys. Pigeon actually commented that it sounds very "clean" or "mild", which probably has something to do with the fact that this amp setting is very close to Angus' tone, whereas I typically pile on the gain...more is more

Really? Can I Play With Madness? The Trooper is pretty much the quinetessential IM song, besides Run To The Hills and Hallowed be Thy Name..

Damn 80's hair metal!

Hey now! >:-(

Do I look like somebody who knows jack about Iron Maiden? I saw the Can I Play With Madness video on YouTube, vaguely remember seeing the video before. And that tune was as close to the style of what you were playing as anything else I could think of.

Do I look like somebody who knows jack about AC/DC? Sounded like the intro to me, which isn't that different from the main riff, right? Anyway, it was easy enough.

Aha. It's been ages since I saw any Looney Tunes. Not since they started dubing Cartoon Network...

I hear ya. That's totally ruined Bugs Bunny, Johnny Bravo AND Dexter's Laboratory for me.
