Death Proof

So, after dropping of Grandmaster W and his entourage and driving back Woody to the office, I stopped by the local gas station and snapped up a copy of Death Proof, Quentin Tarantino's latest flick. Now I won't make excuses, but there wasn't many movies to choice from, I didn't read the cover before I bought it, I've heard it was a good movie in the old Tarantion style, I was young and needed the money, etc, etc. The fact remains that I ended up at a buddy's place with a movie I though was on pair with Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill. Even if I knew old Quentin has released a lot of movies of "less then average quality".

So what did I get? Well, the movie is 1:46, and it starts of with four girls in a Sex And The City setting (except, believe it or not, S&TC is funnier) with what is suppose to be a cool dialogue about sex, men and such (which was so obvious written by a man). So this goes on for about 50 minutes, and if I hadn't been such a big looser, I should have turned it off after 10 minutes. To make things even worse, the movie has a 70's vibe on clothes, car, music and scenery (completed with grainy effects and flickering colors to simulate "old film"), but the girls still have brand new cell phones and iPods.

Anyway, enter Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) which act as a kind of a butt ugly Mr. Big for about 10 minutes. Then the girls leave in their car, and Mighty Mike deliberately crashes his car into theirs and killing all four girls. All within a couple of minutes. End of story.

Over to four new girls in a different state. In a Sex And The City setting (except, believe it or not, S&TC is funnier) with what is suppose to be a cool dialogue about sex, men and such (which was so obvious written by a man). So this goes on for about 30 minutes, and if I hadn't been such a completely looser, I should have turned it off ages ago and been on my way home by now. But did I? Nooo... I watched the whole thing. And again, enter Mighty Mike, which again tries to kill these girls by crashing his car into them. But what he doesn't know that two of the girls are stunt women! Ta-da! Guess what? The girls crash into HIS car and kill him after a 10 minutes car chase.

To summarize: Two thumbs down. An all time low for Mr. Tarantion.

So did Kristian like it?

I must admit, my eyes strayed towards this movie last time we were at the video store. I never went so far as to pick it up and look at it, though. It looked to have potential because of Tarantino, but it also looked like the odds were overwhelmingly against it being cool as it is QT movie. When the man is on, it's all good, but like you said, most of his movie are crap.

Actually, I haven't watched Kill Bill, and I don't intend to, based on the fairly low odds. I don't care how many people swear up and down that Kill Bill is great, as long as it's Tarantino, I strongly suspect that they act on the "misery loves company" principle and try to drag me down with them.

Nope, K-K didn't like it either. It blows. End of story.

I believe ya.

It's just good to have a second opinion, seeing that our taste in movies sometimes......differs. RE: that Melissa Bandidos and That Other mexican Chick Who's Not Currently In A L'Oreal Commercial movie where Melissa was supposed to be a bad-ass, gun-totin', ponytail-wearin', geetar-playin' mexican.

Also, that Danish shite movie about a morgue at a hospital and stuff........DAMN!!

I liked Death proof !!!!

...of course ya did.

Let me guess - it was a remake of a french movie starring Miou-Miou where a mime kept getting rejected by bearded ladies and running into their caravans with his blue bicycle?

So there are monkeys in "Death proof"?

What did you like about it? Do I understand correctly if you actually like Sex And The City?

Kill Bill is great. I swear it. Sure you don't confuse it with Kill Buljo?

Aha - here it comes again. ;-)

Y'all might be absolutely right about Kill Bill, but check out the list of movies involving QT that I've watched:

Reservoir Dogs (Director, Writer, Actor)

Pulp Fiction (Director, Writer)

These two are awesome, but really they're not that different. There are more characters in PF, but otherwise, dude's far and away repeating a cool concept.

Jackie Brown (Director, Writer): The less said about this the better.

True Romance (Writer): Still has teh feeling of a QT movie, as do every flick where he is involved. Something with the sustained single-coil twang guitars and such. I absolutely did not like this one at ALL. Anders: You and Magne raved about it when we watched it way back at Fantoft.

Natural Born Killers (Writer): I swear - this movie is based on "The River" but with inbred people and some drugs....no es bueno

From Dusk Till Dawn (Writer, Producer): Another flick I flat out hated. It's like a bad "Tales from The Crypt" episode with some Twin Peaks added for flava'.

Desperado (Actor): Despite his minimal involvement, this movie still has the feel of a QT project. When I watched this, I was very unsure as to whether it was a spoof or a really, REALLY bad action movie repackaged as a spoof so as to be able to move the product whilst looking the public in the eye. A convenient fallback, if ya will. Still not sure about that, but I DO know I thought it sucked something fierce.

Since Pigeon keeps bugging me whenever I screw up with regard to the roles of Producer, Director and whatnot, I took the liberty of consulting imdb.com for accurate description of QT's roles for each project.

Totally agree. I was actually one of the few(?) who had seen Reservoir Dogs before Pulp Fiction came out. So Pulp Fiction was great, but I was a tiny bit disappointed about the fact that it was so similar to RD. RD also introduced me to a whole bunch of actors: Michael Madsen, Steve Buscemi and Tim Roth.

From Dusk Till Dawn: Oh hell yeah, this is crap. Even if ZZ Top delivered one of their best new songs this side of 1990 for the sound track, it couldn't save this movie. What's worse, Robert Rodriquez (director and co-producer) has made a numbero does y tres of FDTD. The only good thing about this movie is the gaffer job by David Lee.*

Desperado: I kind of like this movie. But if you think Pupl F. is a copy of RD, check out El Mariachi. Same movie, only different actors. (Desperado is supposed to be a sequel, but it isn't. It's the same movie. Even the Police Academy flicks are more different then these two).

Jackie Brown: Not that I thought this was an excellent movie, but it wasn't QT's worse either.

True Romance: Jupp, I kind of like this one. I admit. But it's a loooong time since I've watched it.

*That was a joke, pigeon.

Yup - turns out the only two QT movies I like are in fact pretty much the same thing.

SO; no KB for me...at least without having Jaegerbombs with it 8-D

Not now, Chief - I'm in the Zone

I had given up on QT, but Kill Bill kind of renewed my faith in him. But then came Death Proof...

But I see right trough you, mr. I know the real reason why you don't wanna see Kill Bill. Bill-Billy-Willy-Wilhelm... It's just too scary, innit? :-D

Yeah; you figured me out. Good job.

Reservoir Dogs : Cool movie that I have seen before Pulp (welcome to the club A)

Pulp : Fantastic movie (one of the only one with Willis that I really liked with Die Hard 1, unbreakable and 12 Monkeys)

Jacky Brown: Like Anders said : not his best movie but still cool to watch.

True Romance : Don't like it but I don't know if it's because of tarantino or because of Tony Scott (the director) who pollutes everything he touches (except maybe man on fire)

Natural born killers : Good concept destroyed by Oliver Stone (the most overrated director of all time)

From Dusk till dawn : Funny popcorn movie with a lot of references

desperado : He made el mariachi for 8000 dollars so he wanted to make his movie again with a real budget. Finally same result. I still don't know what to think about that movie.

You liked FDTD?

So obviously you liked Coyote Ugly as well?
