Welcome to Loserville......

...population: Me.

My cell phone totally broke today, as can clearly be seen from the accompanying photo. Not only is the glass broken, but there's an actual dent in the metal casing. All this happened to my phone while I was carrying it in my front pocket, without me noticing it before way after the fact. I've carried my phones like this since day one, and inexplicably, today it backfired.

Freak accident or missed payment on Karmic debt?

The worst part is that the electronics stores always have an f'ed up cell phone on display as visual aid for their "Insurances for the Cerebrally Challenged" (ICC), wherein the basic concept is that if you pay an additional 50% of the phone's worth, they'll replace your phone if you drive your car over it, accidentally drop it in a glass of beer and whatnot, so long as this unforeseen damage occurs between the cash register and the entrance door of the store, between 11.59 AM and 12:01 PM Monday through Wednesday. Basically you need an insurance for the ICC if you actually want to use it, and even then, it's caveat emptor. Still; today I wish I had one of those.

At least I get to experience the unbridled joy of shopping for a new phone + subscription.

And that is a metal casing, not some cheap ass plastic one like most are. Though luck.

I hope you have backup of all those SW soundfiles... ;-)

I'm sure he will choose his next phone with the same ring tones.

Anders: I know; I can't believe I didn't notice that it happened. It totally went mexican on me, and now I've got it all taped up like an idiot.

'Cause it turned out that my subscription has two more weeks on it before I qualify for any offers. I'll bide my time with my taped-up phone for two weeks and save ~1600 NOK on that new htc-thingy.

I saw the Sony-Ericsson phone you recommended, and no offense, but compared to the HTC S710 it totally wiped out. Plus it's like almost 1 kNOK more, so I'm totally going with the Windows whatever. For sure I'll regret my decision if and when the software decides to lock up, delete all my files and randomly import viruses, but for now my decision stands.

4500 for the Sony Ericsson W950? Forget that - that's a Digitech Whammy and an YJM DOD.

Hey, now get yourself some coke bottle sized glasses, tape'em and you're on the express highway to Nerdsville... :-D

4500 NOK for the sony? Man, that was expensive! I would have guessed 3000-3500 NOK. I really like the touch screen technology that sony has, and the design of the W950.

Actually; I stand corrected. At Komplett.no, the price for the W950i is 4995 NOK, so it's a half KNOK more than I said.

That's just flat out too much for that one, methinks. The only thing the HTC S710 doesn't have is apparently an mp3 player (at least according to the store weasel), but I'll manage.

The good thing is that the new subscription I'll change to is way more appripriate for my use, and I'll actually save some money while getting the phone cheaper.

Well, since it has stereo handsfree and is windows based, it should be no problem finding a suitable MP3 playa' software. Buy a 2 gb or more memory card, so you can store the complete Eurovision Songcontest finalist. And maybe even have spare room for some music...

Hmmm..interesting, this fact is. You got the mojo necessary to set this up?

Depressingly, I am somewhat ingorant of this type of technology, despite my present position and place of work

:-(

Well, I haven't any experience with Win based phones, but it should be even easier then on Sony E and Nokia. And that's a breeze...

I'm 99% sure that this solution would work on your phone, but give me a couple of days, and I'll verify it.

Kewl. That'd be sweet.

Now I only have to wait until July 10th, as then endeth my subscription.

Trade you a HTC S710 with an installed MP3-player and 2 gb memory card for a PRS McCarty with humbuckers and really dark fretboard?

Okey, it was a long shot. A really long shot...

Wilhelm said...

....I can totally trade a mexican PRS McCarty with buckers and extra dark fretboard for an HTC S710 with whatever.

No problemo, if so....

;-)

That would be for a chinese HTC S710 (wholesale, USD15 a piece...)
:-D

...No US custom HTC S710, no deal.

No es bueno

>:-(

What did you think of the W950i price compared to that of the HTC S710 though?

Why in the hell would it be more than 1000 NOK more expensive?

Anders said...

Well, you're basically paying for the internal harddrive. The Sony has 4 GB vs HTCs 128 MB. Internal harddrive is expensive. But of course, you can add a micro SD memory card to the HTC. For about 2-300 NOK you get 2GB. Don't know if the Micro SD comes in larger sizes. And if 2 GB isn't enough, you could always buy another card and fill it with music and just switch card after the mood.

And, WTF did the store weasel tell you? The HTC comes with Windows Media Player (yes, not the best MP3-player around, but it works, dammit!). If you're not happy with that one, you could always install others.

The main difference between the phones: The HTC is a handheld PC with MP3-player possibillites. The Sony is a MP3-player with handheld possibillites. Both are phones, though...

Personally I'm in love with though screen, so I wouldn't consider a mobile without it. And I don't like qwerty keyboards on my cell phone. Others like it the other way around. I don't know what camp you're in, bit that would be a major factor when you decide.

On a side note: This post made me go into the Sony Ericsson webpage. Man, those upcoming P1 and W960 looks good...

Damn it's me or it's extremely nerdy here.

It's just you, pigeon. And maybe Rodrigo. :-)

Man that store weasel was an incompetent motherf'er then. And I definitely count myself as being more of a qwerty-guy than a touch-screen queen, if ya know what I mean ;-)

Especially considering my handwriting...
