I got a digital single-lens reflex camera (Nikon D60) from my wife for Christmas, and I've slowly gotten to the stage where I don't suck quite as much anymore. Don't get me wrong; I'm still a complete dilettante, but I'm getting better. I used to be the guy who'd take someone's picture and end up with a photograph consisting of 76% skyline and the actual motive out of focus. I also used to be the guy who'd keep insisting that we'd stop the car whenever we crossed Valdresflya or something of similar scenic value, so that I could snap some shots, completely neglecting that trying to take pictues of large, scenic landscapes with a small digital camera is a little bit like trying to drink water out of a firehose operating at full capacity.
No more of that - or at least I'm putting more effort into it. The technical aspect of photography is improving in what I do, although I'm still mostly clinging to the comfort of the "Auto" setting. The biggest change has to do with my finally starting to come to terms with the limitations of a camera lens compared to the human eyes. My ability to pick out motives and compose a picture is slowly improving. I don't really know why my ability to select motives has been so abysmal, seeing as how I'm used to microscopy and I'm more than competent at making PowerPoint presentations that are functional as well as easy on the eyes. This deficiency has also taught me that photography is one of them things that can be checked off as not being hereditary, since my dad is a really good amateur photographer.
In as far as selecting motives, my thing at the moment is how light interacts with trees under various conditions - trees are currently my bag.

I can relate to this post. I have a reflex Nikkon camera myself (a slighly less fancier then yours), but haven't had time or energy to put more effort into it. But it's fun to explore, even in a very amateurish way. Love to see more of your photos if you have, pal.

Are you saying that your experience with photography and your new camera up to now are two snapshots of trees, but that for me, you're willing to step outside for a couple of minutes and take a couple more? I was kinda hoping you had some more in store...

I've been playing around with my camera as well. I've improved on my close up portrait skills (not that I'm anywhere near of mastering that skill, I'm only sucking a bit less then before) and have a couple of lucky action shots. Still struggling with group shots or scenery, and I would love to be able to do some cool guitar photos... :-/

Well, if you get honest tips and constructive critism, then it would be cool. But I've never tried any of those services myself. It's also a copyright issue here, and I don't know what the policy of those services are in that regards.
Looked at both, and I'm not sure either would work for me. Foto.no is quite restrictive with respect to the amount of pics you can upload, not to mention that the use of full name is required, which means I can't link to it from m-factor. A flickr would require me to register a Yahoo ID + all kinds of crap that I quite frankly wasn't willing to put up with at the time I checked it out. I didn't really get a sense of how the copyright thing worked at flickr either.
With respect to the copyright issue, I guess I'm completely screwed when I post pics here. That creative commons thing didn't really look like something practical either - I tried to implement it on this blog, but ended up in a quagmire I quite frankly did NOT have the patience for (You probably have some vague memories of how little patience I've got vis-a-vis computer software issues), dead links to instructions, etc.
