Answers - guitarquiz 18

Quite the simple quiz apparently, as it was lost or won based on one song and artist. The songs were:

  • Song 86: Scorpions - Still Loving You. A power ballad so recognizable and sentimental that to this day, I think you can safely include this in any pub gig. Provided you're a rock band, that is........if you call yourselves The Bluegrass Brothers you might get in trouble for doing a tune like this, and if you're gigging at the Inferno festival, you might get your ass kicked by anemic, skinny nerds with studded leather jackets, jet-black hair, black t-shirts with an illegigible band name and a graphic of a demon doing some evil shit, and an inverted cross bracelet they either got from their mom or bought for their welfare check.
  • Song 87: Megadeth - Angry Again. One of my favorite Megadeth tunes. And not to be that guy, but if you compare my recording to the original, I was surprised at how close I got in terms of guitar tone AND technique, including the "Hick bend". Not bad for an impromptu single-take based on memory - check out teh lyrics too:

...and on to the next three songs:
  • Song 88: Lenny Kravitz - It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over. Simple, Hendrix-y tune, like the rest of Kravitz' songs....next
  • Song 89: A-ha - Take On Me. This guitar tone was the closest I got to the keyboard sound..........
  • Song 90: Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama. The runner-up redneck Anthem of All Time. In my opinion, the best version of this song is from the 8 Mile soundtrack........

The Score after round 18 looks a li'l something like this:

  1. Cathy (10/10)
  2. Pigeon (9/10)
  3. Anders/Sondre (tied at 8/10)

...and the Big Kahuna, The Daddy of them All - the Total Score is now:

  1. Sondre (124 points)
  2. Pigeon (107 points)
  3. Anders (101 points)
  4. Cathy (100 points)
  5. Torbjørn (6 points)

Congrats to Cathy and Sondre and good luck with Quiz 19!

Scorpions - Still Loving You
As tasteful as only German music can be...

Megadeth - Angry Again
Damn commercial 80's crap metal. Even though the tune is from the 90's?

Lenny Kravitz - It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over
I have to admit, the dude has it's moments. This isn't one of them.

A-ha - Take On Me
Great take on this one, dude. Made me smile when I heard the keyboard played on gitar. Good job.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama
Not the runner up for redneck anthem, but the winner (in my opinion). And the best version is the acoustic take with the slide guitar solo (somehow I feel that you disagree, Wilhelm, even before hearing this version).

Soooo... Do you mean that is the best parameter to judge the quality of a song by? Then my previous definition of a classic tune (Unknown, hairy 80's softmetal tune that are only known to a few local inbred drunks in the rural parts of Norway) are pretty much spot on, no?

....like Dave hasn't heard that one before.... ;-)

Whoa! Are you being, like, sarcastic here, dude?

...self-ownage :-)

LOL...and agree

Thanks - I felt sort of ridiculous recording with this Mickey Mouse tone though. And personally I'm MUCH happier with the sound on "Angry Again"

If I see an album named "Pan Flute Fiesta" or "All Ibiza All The Time", I don't need to buy it and give it a listen to tell that the forecast calls for an 98% chance of scattered showers of monkey crap, followed by a steady downpour of suction. Know what I mean? ;-)

Absolutely not. I'm saying that if your plan is to gig and make money doing cover versions, you might want to include songs generally perceived by the Joe Q. Public to be awesome. Commercial appeal and quality only rarely coincide.

You could make Mickey Mouse your signature tone, you know. Would really stand out in the world of metal... ;-)

Totally agree on that one...

Do you know that some people (I mean Wilhelm there) claim that Megadeth and Metallica are actually not the exact same thing ?
I think you deserve 0.5 point here

Well, I scared you away from the last thread, didn't I?

No, no, you are that guy, W-boi. ;-)

Seriously, now that I've heard the tune: Yes, it was one of the songs on the quiz where you are closest to the original.

And, I almost forgot: Congrats to Cathy for opening up a can of whoopass and getting a full score this round. And getting one point closer to the Scorpion-lovin' french guy...

..you figure Anders is gonna fall for that twice? If lack of credibility on beer bets were sand grains, you'd be the Sahara as far as he's concerned...

Hey now! Is this to be considered as charity or investment in developing contestants?

LOL at the "Can of whoop-ass" comment. You've been taking notes and listening to The Rock promos, I reckon'?
