Sports are for... ?

Well, since Wilhelm has a deep and genuine interest in sports, I though I should post this.

The Norwegian Confederation of Sports (NIF) has just recently elected a new president, which is basically the head of all sports here in Norway. Before the election, it was a great deal of fuzz around the election and the candidates.

One of the candidates really caught my attention. Barbro Lill Hætta-Jacobsen is a young woman from the northern parts of our country, which was suggested as a candidate. So far so good, getting a young woman in among those old men doesn't sound as a bad idea after all. And, the only(?) formal requirement for the presidency is that the candidate has to be a member of confederation and has been a member at least one month. And everybody that place soccer, handball, etc here in this country is a member. However, Mrs. Hætta-Jacobsen had trouble meeting that requirement. The only sports experience she has, is a month of amateur sports for her company ("bedriftsidrett").

Not much, eh? She basically got no experience or special knowledge of sports or sports politics. So what else does she have going for her? Well, in an interview she claims that her background as a physician makes her qualified for the job. I couldn't really see why practice medicine should give her extra competence as an administrative leader, but I guess that if she has background as a sports physician, I could see the benefit. So I check. She is actually a district physician in Harstad. How is that relevant at all? According her, because "her job as a physician has made her realize that activity is important". Did she have to go 18 years at school and practice medicine a couple of years before realizing that?

So what do I think? That her background as Miss Kautokeino is equally important, since that learned her a lot about making speeches and meeting other people. And war and peace and politics and stuff...

If in fact the only formal requirement for the presidency is that said candicate must have been a NIF member for at least a month, it explains a lot of the bush-league activities even I have observed over the last year.

I'm surprised they didn't include a requirement that "candidate must be a carbon-based life form".

But realistically; what sort of qualifications do you feel such a candidate should hold? 'Cause raking in money from fees, gambling enterprises and sponsors in hyooge surplus and then reallocating some of the money in such a way that 99.999% goes back to the sports most likely to generate revenue (i.e. soccer, women's handball and perhaps hockey) doesn't seem like a particularly difficult job. In Norway, NIF is a monopoly, so it's not like they have to worry about any form of competition. If any company wants to sponsor a Norwegian soccer-team (not to be confused with football), they also sponsor NIF.

Well, I would expect at a Miss Norway title, or at least a Miss title from at larger region then Kautokeino, to be more including for the members of the confederation.

Seriously, how 'bout a genuine interest in sports? It is so obvious that she is only in this to promote her own career and filling up her CV.

Pigeon: No, she didn't. She was not qualified after all...

....seeing as how NIF is obviously not an ideal organization, I'm not so sure that a genuine interest in sports is required or even desirable. Do you think the CEO of (insert name of large pulp and paper manufacturer here) has a deep and profound interest in toilet paper?

PS: Booooooyah!!!!!!!

No, not necessary, but I bet the said CEO has a degree in economics or law that would be beneficial in his work. And that he has learned something about paper, other then wiping his *ss with it...

Tru, tru......but I guess that's because a legitimate business must meet higher standards for book-keeping etc. than some bush-league wanna-be-gangster glorified lemonade stand masquerading as an athletics organization.

I take it that you don't particularly like NIF? ;-)

Anyway, I wonder if said CEO has a Miss title to show off...

Not the world's biggest fan, no. Despite having been a (forced) member for many years, I've seen exactly zero benefits for "niche" sports. One still has to pay ridiculous membership fees, one gets zero discount when renting a venue, uniforms and other accessories do not become any cheaper, etc. Apparently NIF is da bomb if you play soccer or handball, but if you don't, then too bad. For an ideal organization they sure cater to the money.

According to a recent letter to a large Norwegain news paper, apparently Mrs. Hætta-Jacobsen still think she's qualified for the job. I'll try to dig up the online source for this and add it to the original post.
